MURDEIRA BEACH RESORT, Sal, Cape Verde Islands
This gated resort, set right on the ocean on a West facing bay
has one of the prime sites in the Cape Verde Islands. Murdeira offers 24 hour security,
reception, and a range of places to stay from one bedroom apartments
to 3 bedroom villas. 10 mins airport transfer.
The Murdeira resort is well laid out and there is a feeling of
air and space. Yet everything is relatively close by; you are never
more than about 300 yards from the reception and swimming pool.
To either side of the Murdeira resort, the island has not been developed
and it's possible to walk for miles along empty beaches, overlooking
the bay with Cape Verde's mini rock of Gibraltar, Monte Leon. The
properties in the resort are owned by a mix of locals and foreigners
from a variety of European countries. Many visit only rarely, so
the resort is generally quiet. There
are facilities for children.
There are 2 and 3 bedroom villas, 1 bed appartments and a hotel
which offers suites (bedroom and reception room). Many of the properties
have a seaview at Murdeira, and those in the front-line look out
to the turqouise baia da Murdeira and the ocean beyond.
Murdeira was built some six years ago with Cape Verdean architects
and a lot of German equipment. This included the gym, decompression
chamber, household appliances and furniture. There are plenty of
parking spaces, either in designated car parks, or outside individual
villas. Fllowers and shrubs are maturing. Many of the local
dignitaries live in Murdeira because of its proximity to Espargos,
Sal's capital. This means you are not totally in a holiday resort,
but can get the feel of being in the Cape Verde Islands. Most of
the owners live abroad and visit their properties only occasionally which means that often you can have the swimming pool to yourself, and find a totally empty beach.
Taxis, doctors, nurses, services can be ordered from reception.
Every property has access to cable television.
Where is Murdeira?
It's 10 minutes from the airport and the island's capital, Espargos,
and 10 minutes from Santa Maria. You can get to any of these by
taxi, or public bus. In addition there is a resort minibus service
several times daily into Santa Maria during peak season.
Where to eat and drink in Murdeira
The restaurant in the Murdeira resort is by the ocean, and next
to the swimming pool. It serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. There
are also many places to eat out in Espargos and Santa Maria. Several
of these offer outside dining. There's a grocery store in the resort,
and supermarkets in Santa Maria and Espargos.
The bar by the pool has seating outside overlooking the pool, seating
indoors (TV), and seating outside right at the water's edge overlooking
Murdeira bay.
Sports at the resort
Manta Diving centre has an agreement with Murdeira, and its main
organisation is at Santa Maria. They offer PADI courses and a range
of dives in a wide variety of locations including wrecks, caves,
volcanic rocks.
The tennis court is made of astroturf, and is floodlit. There is
a court charge of 200 CVE during the day and 300 CVE at night.
The gym is well equipped with German equipment (no charge). Table
tennis, table football, billiards are all near the grocery store.
If you like swimming or snorkelling the seawater pool is a decent
length for a really good swim (no charge for pool or sunbeds). There
are various beaches which you can choose to swim from. Even right by the shore, there is a large range of fish to
view.
Guest comments
We liked Murdeira a lot. for me there was no alternative. I'd rather
have the swimming pool, tennis. the whole complex is fantastic.

I just love feeling so close to the ocean. To be at the water's
edge and have a beach to myself is something that is hardly possible
in Europe. To hear the sound of the waves at night is my idea of
a dream come true. Murdeira offers everything I want, and yet it's
so close to Espargos and Santa Maria C from London
